What is a sub-brow lift?
A sub-brow lift is a surgical procedure that addresses sagging skin by creating incisions below the eyebrows. It is commonly recommended when the skin beneath the eyebrows droops and obscures the crease of the double eyelid, or when there is a significant presence of eye wrinkles.
What is difference between sub-brow lift and forehead lift (brow lift)?
Forehead (brow) lift
A brow lift is a surgical procedure that repositions the forehead to lift the brow, diminish wrinkles, and create a more youthful appearance. With age, the skin loses elasticity, and sun damage weakens the skin, causing gravity to pull the brow down and resulting in wrinkles. Frown lines between the eyebrows and horizontal lines on the forehead may also develop.
Additionally, sagging of the outer brow can make one appear sad or tired due to drooping eyebrows. If you wish to address these natural changes in your appearance, a brow lift may be suitable for you.
Sub-brow lift surgery process:
Sub-brow lift is an operation that raises the upper eyelids and enhances the appearance of heavy-looking eyelids. It is a suitable procedure for individuals with excessive loose skin that obscures their double eyelids. As we get older, our eyebrows start to sag, leading to an angry, concerned, or fatigued look. Through this surgery, the drooping eyelids can be lifted and secured. An incision is made beneath the eyebrow to tighten and pull the skin, resulting in the improvement of sagging eyes and the creation of a more rejuvenated image.
Why get a sub-brow lift?
A sub-brow lift serves as an intermediate stage towards achieving a complete forehead lift. It is a less complex and more refined surgical procedure, making it suitable for younger individuals seeking a subtle enhancement around the eyes.
Many of our Asian patients, who often have thick eyelid skin and heavy eyelid components beneath the brows, experience a gradual drooping effect over time. This phenomenon typically begins in their 30s, but can even manifest as early as the late-20s, as the skin naturally stretches. Consequently, this leads to eyelids partially covering the eyes.
Signs You May Need Droopy Eyelid Surgery
Some cases of drooping eyelids can be treated without eyelid surgery, while others will need blepharoplasty to improve the condition. You may need droopy eyelid surgery if:
- The skin on your upper or lower eyelids sags
- You have trouble seeing due to your eyelids hanging too low
- You find it difficult to keep your eyes open due to heavy eyelids
In cases where your upper eyelid is interfering with your vision, Dr.Hong can perform routine tests to determine which approach to choose for best outcome.

A 54-year-old patient came to Dr. Hong seeking eye rejuvenation. The patient had droopy upper eyelids (ptosis), which made their eyes appear gloomy and heavy, and also affected their eyesight.
Additionally, the lower part of their eyes had age-related changes, resulting in under eye hernia (eye bags) and sagging skin. To enhance the overall facial appearance and achieve a softer look, Dr. Hong recommended a sub-brow lift along with lower blepharoplasty.
